How Dental Crowns Work

Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our office. Initially, we remove decay, prepare and shape the tooth and make an impression.

Then we will make and fit a temporary or transitional crown made out of plastic or metal.

In the second visit, we remove the temporary crown, fit and adjusts the final crown and cement it into place.

DENTAL CROWNS

How Teeth Crowns Work

When a tooth is fractured, has a large old filling or is severely damaged by decay, your dentist may recommend the placement of a crown, also called a cap.

Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your smile.

Types of crowns include the full porcelain crown, the porcelain-fused-to-metal crown, and the all-metal crown.

Teeth Whitening for Crowns and Veneers

Your dentist will match the crown color to the color of your teeth. If you are considering whitening your teeth, you should talk to your dentist about tooth whitening options before the crown is made.

Since bleaching products do not affect the color of crowns, it is important that your natural teeth are whitened first so the dentist can match the crown color to the color of your teeth after they are whitened.

Types of Dental Bridges

1. TRADITIONAL DENTAL BRIDGES

Traditional bridges are the most popular kind of bridge. These bridges consist of one or more pontics (fake teeth) and are held in place by dental crowns. These dental crowns are also called abutments, and they are cemented onto the teeth adjacent to your missing tooth.

Traditional bridges can be used when you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap created by your missing tooth.

Bridges are even strong enough to replace molars.

The downside of traditional bridges is that your dentist will need to prepare the adjacent teeth by removing their enamel to make room for the crowns that will be cemented on top. Since enamel doesn’t grow back, these teeth will always need to be protected with crowns, even if you later choose a different type of bridge.

Dental Restoration Costs and Insurance

keep in mind that most dental insurance plans don’t currently cover dental implants.

They may be covered under your medical insurance depending on the reason for your tooth loss and whether you have other related medical conditions.

Talk to your dental professional to determine the best strategy to promote your oral health.

Tooth Restoration Options

When deciding on a strategy for restorative dentistry, you’ll need to consider both physical and fiscal factors—your health and your budget.

Dentists at Virginia Family Dentistry involved in restorative dentistry will try to preserve your natural teeth if possible before resorting to full or partial dentures so you won’t have to remove and clean the devices regularly.

However, sometimes full or partial dentures are the better option if you have many missing teeth and you’re not a good candidate for dental implants due to other health issues.

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is often referred to as prosthodontic dentistry. Whether your dental professional uses the term “restorative dentistry” or “prosthodontic dentistry,” the goal is to preserve natural teeth as much as possible.

Replacing missing teeth with a dental implant, bridge, full or partial denture helps promote dental health as well. Filling in empty spaces in the mouth can help prevent cavities in the remaining teeth because odd-shaped gaps are vulnerable spots for plaque-causing bacteria to build up.

Missing teeth also put extra stress on your remaining natural teeth because you don’t have as much surface area to chew with.
